Book Review: Biographical Dictionary of Psychology
As I delved into the pages of Biographical Dictionary of Psychology, written by Noel Sheehy, Antony J. Chapman, and Wendy A. Conroy, I was immediately struck by how comprehensive and informative the book is. Covering over 600 pages, it provides biographical information on over 1,500 influential figures in the field of psychology.
The authors have done an excellent job of gathering information from various sources and presenting it in a concise yet engaging manner. Each entry is well-researched and provides a wealth of information about the individual’s life, work, and contributions to the field.
One aspect that really resonated with me was how the book showcased both the historical perspective as well as modern-day heroes in psychology. The entries range from Sigmund Freud to contemporary psychologists like Martin Seligman.
I also appreciated how each entry had a clear structure – starting with a brief biography, followed by an examination of their work and contribution to psychological theory or practice. This approach made the book easy to navigate and provided valuable insight into each person’s contribution.
One criticism I have is that some entries felt a bit repetitive; several individuals were repeated multiple times throughout different sections of the book. Additionally, some entries felt too brief or lacked depth in their analysis.
Overall, this reference book is an exceptional resource for anyone interested in psychology or seeking knowledge on key influencers who shaped this field over time. It offers an accessible yet fascinating deep dive into what drives human behavior while also providing insights into how those behaviors have evolved over time.
I give Biographical Dictionary of Psychology by Noel Sheehy, Antony J. Chapman & Wendy A. Conroy 4 out of 5 stars for its thoroughness and engaging approach while remaining critical about its shortcomings with some repetitive entries and lackluster analysis in certain sections.
