Book Review: Health Psychology: A Cultural Approach

As a book critic, I recently delved into the world of health psychology with Regan A.R. Gurung’s “Health Psychology: A Cultural Approach.” Published by Cengage Learning in 2009, this comprehensive guide spans over 500 pages and delves deep into the cultural factors that impact our physical and mental health.

Gurung’s approach to health psychology is refreshing and insightful. Rather than solely focusing on Western views of health and wellness, he incorporates perspectives from around the world, showcasing the diverse ways that cultures approach well-being. It’s eye-opening to see how different communities prioritize their health and what methods they use for maintaining it – from Ayurvedic medicine in India to traditional Chinese medicine.

One thing I particularly appreciated about this book is its emphasis on addressing healthcare disparities among different cultures. Gurung doesn’t shy away from difficult topics like racism in healthcare or inadequate access for marginalized communities. Instead, he takes a critical look at these issues and offers solutions for creating more inclusive and accessible healthcare systems.

That being said, at times the book can feel dense with information. With over 500 pages, it can be a lot to take in all at once. However, Gurung’s writing style is engaging and his anecdotes about different cultural practices keep things interesting.

Overall, “Health Psychology: A Cultural Approach” left me feeling both enlightened and inspired. It’s clear that there is still much work to be done in creating equitable healthcare systems that serve all individuals regardless of their background or culture. But by taking into account cultural perspectives on health psychology, we can move closer to achieving this goal.
