Book Review: Oxford Handbook of Internet Psychology

The Oxford Handbook of Internet Psychology, written by Adam Joinson and published by OUP Oxford, is a comprehensive and insightful look into the impact of the internet on our psychological well-being. With a page count of 508, this handbook is not for the faint-hearted. However, if you are interested in delving deep into the subject of how the internet affects us psychologically, then this book will not disappoint.

Joinson’s research is top-notch and backed up by a plethora of studies that explore themes such as online identity formation, online disinhibition, addiction to social media and other online activities, and many more. The author also expertly breaks down how these phenomena intersect with major psychological theories such as social identity theory, cognitive dissonance theory, and many others.

What I found most striking about this book was how it made me feel. As someone who spends a significant amount of my day on the internet (as I imagine many people do), reading this book made me more self-aware about my own online habits. It illuminated patterns of behavior that I didn’t even realize existed within myself. That being said, there were times when certain parts felt overly academic or dry.

Overall though, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in exploring how the internet affects our mental health. The insights here are invaluable and will leave you with plenty to ponder long after you’ve finished reading. On a scale from 1-10, I’d give it an 8 – informative but at times a bit too dense for casual reading.
