The Perverse Organisation and its Deadly Sins by Susan Long is a book that delves into the darker side of organizations and how they can become self-destructive. Throughout the book, Long provides numerous case studies and examples to illustrate her points, making it a well-researched and insightful read.
One of the strengths of this book is Long’s ability to engage readers with her writing style. She doesn’t just provide dry analysis – rather, she uses real-world examples that are easy to understand and relate to. Her writing is clear and concise, making it accessible for both academics and non-academics alike.
The most interesting aspect of this book is how it made me feel. As someone who has worked in many different organizations, I found myself nodding along with much of what Long had to say. The idea that organizations can become perverse was something I had experienced firsthand, but never quite had the words to describe until reading this book.
The Deadly Sins that Long describes – such as denial, omniscience, perfectionism – are all too familiar in many workplaces. What I found particularly striking was how these sins could be present in even the most well-meaning organizations.
That being said, there were some criticisms I had with the book. At times it felt repetitive -Long discussing similar themes over multiple chapters- however overall she managed to keep things fresh enough so that my interest did not waver.
Overall, The Perverse Organisation and its Deadly Sins is an engaging read that has left a lasting impression on me. It’s a must-read for anyone who wants to better understand why some organizations thrive while others self-destruct upon themselves. Susan Long’s work proves that looking at an organization from different angles can help us identify issues we may have otherwise overlooked, allowing us as individuals and as organisations grow into stronger versions of ourselves.
