Book Review: Ebony
As a book critic, I recently read “Ebony” published by Johnson Publishing Company in 2008. This book struck a chord with me and left me feeling both enlightened and empowered.
The book is a collection of articles and photographs from Ebony magazine, spanning over the decades from the 1950s to the present day. It covers a wide range of topics relevant to African-American culture, including music, politics, fashion, and social justice issues.
One of the most striking aspects of this book is the way it captures the spirit of African-American identity and history. It celebrates black excellence in all forms, from athletes to entrepreneurs and everything in between. The authors’ words are powerful and moving; they don’t shy away from difficult topics like racism or inequality but tackle them head-on with honesty and courage.
The photographs included in “Ebony” are just as powerful as the writing itself. They capture moments that have shaped black history – such as Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat on the bus – providing a visual narrative for readers that brings these events closer to home.
The only downside I found with this book was its length – at only 194 pages, it felt like it barely scratched the surface of all there is to say about African-American culture and history. Nevertheless, I found myself returning to certain articles and photos again and again – proof that this book has staying power.
In summary, “Ebony” is a must-read for anyone interested in African-American culture or looking for inspiration from those who have overcome adversity against all odds. It’s a testament to black excellence throughout history that will leave readers feeling informed, enlightened, empowered – even proud – of their identity and heritage.
